Software Intelligence

Software Intelligence gives your organization complete visibility into the software landscape across your environment. As files are analyzed, the platform automatically catalogs vendors, products, versions, and license types -- building a living inventory that grows with every upload. Combined with Sanctioned Apps, Software Intelligence turns raw analysis data into actionable compliance and cost insights.

What It Does

Software Intelligence automatically answers three questions about your software environment:

What software do we have?

The Inventory tab provides a complete catalog of every vendor and product detected across all analyses. See file counts, first-seen and last-seen dates, version spread, and sanctioned status at a glance.

Are we paying for the same thing twice?

The Redundancy tab identifies cases where multiple products in your environment serve the same purpose -- for example, three different PDF readers or two competing archive utilities. Consolidating redundant tools reduces cost, simplifies support, and shrinks your attack surface.

Are we compliant with our licenses?

The License Overview tab categorizes every detected product by license type -- open source, freeware, commercial, or trial -- and flags potential compliance issues such as commercial software without sufficient license coverage.

Inventory Tab

The Inventory tab is the foundation of Software Intelligence. It shows every unique vendor and product combination seen in your analyses, automatically populated as files are scanned.

For each entry, you can see:

  • Vendor & product name -- the publisher and specific application identified during analysis.
  • File count -- how many analyzed files belong to this vendor/product.
  • First seen / last seen -- when this software first appeared and its most recent occurrence.
  • Sanctioned status -- whether this software is sanctioned (approved), prohibited, under review, or not yet categorized.

Use the inventory to discover shadow IT, identify unvetted vendors, and understand the full scope of software in your environment -- even before creating sanctioned app entries.

Redundancy Tab

Redundancy detection groups products by functional category and highlights overlaps. When your inventory contains multiple tools in the same category (e.g., two text editors, three compression utilities), the Redundancy tab flags these for review.

Each redundancy group shows:

  • Category -- the functional purpose shared by the grouped products.
  • Products -- all detected products that serve the same purpose.
  • Total files -- combined file count across all redundant products in the group.

Reducing software redundancy helps your organization standardize on approved tools, lower licensing costs, and reduce the number of applications that need security monitoring and patching.

License Overview Tab

The License Overview examines the licensing model of each product in your inventory and categorizes them by type:

Open Source

Freely available software distributed under open-source licenses.

Freeware

Free-to-use software that may have a proprietary license.

Commercial

Paid software requiring an active license or subscription.

Trial

Time-limited or feature-limited evaluation versions.

Commercial software is flagged when the number of observed instances exceeds the max installs limit set in your Sanctioned Apps configuration. This helps you catch potential license violations before they become audit findings.

Combining with Sanctioned Apps

Software Intelligence and Sanctioned Apps work together to create a complete software governance workflow:

  1. Discover -- Software Intelligence automatically catalogs every vendor and product from your analyses, building your inventory without manual effort.
  2. Categorize -- Review the inventory and create Sanctioned App entries to classify each product as approved, prohibited, or under review.
  3. Enforce -- Once categorized, the platform automatically tags future analyses with the sanctioned status. Prohibited software can trigger approval rules or agent enforcement.
  4. Optimize -- Use redundancy detection to identify consolidation opportunities and the license overview to track compliance, reducing both cost and risk.

Getting Started

Software Intelligence is available on all paid plans. The inventory populates automatically as your organization analyzes files -- no configuration required. To get the most value:

  • Review your inventory periodically and create sanctioned app entries for key vendors.
  • Set max installs limits on commercial software to track license compliance.
  • Check the Redundancy tab to find consolidation opportunities across your organization.
  • Use the License Overview to identify commercial software that may need additional license purchases.
